Prof. Dr. Ir. Luc Sterckx
Chairman of The Board of Directors - Chairman Febeliec
Luc Sterckx holds a MSc and a PhD in Chemical Engineering, as well as a post-graduate in Business Administration. He is equally a certified International Director from Insead.
He started his career with several years at Exxon, then became the CEO of Indaver before joining the executive committee of PetroFina (merged with Total) in which capacity he served a.o. as Managing Director of Fina Holding Deutschland. As CEO he completed subsequently the MBO of Oleon and held after that the position of CEO of EDF-Luminus .
He is actually an active Board member/president and company consultant in well over a dozen of companies. He has sat on over 25 different Boards of Directors of various nature, structure and origin. His director and counseling work focuses on the fields of energy and corporate governance and he is involved in several start-ups as well as structured foundations and funds. He is a part-time Professor at the KULeuven and an expert on internal governance. He is a member of the Audit Committee Institute and a Fellow of the International Academy of Management.
Board Director - Chairwoman of the Ethics Committee of Total
Hilde Luystermans is Chairwoman of the Ethics Committee of Total as of October 1st 2017. Prior to this position Hilde Luystermans was General Manager of the Antwerp platform as from April,1 2012 and General Manager of Total Olefins Antwerp as from April 1, 2008 . From 2006 till 2008 Hilde Luystermans was Senior Vice-President Purchasing & Polymers Logistics at Petrofina S.A. in Brussels .
From 2002 to 2006, Hilde Luystermans was Plant Manager of Total Petrochemicals Antwerp, the Polyethylene plant in Antwerp and before that, from 1999 to 2002 she was Project Manager of PP3 (poly-propylene plant 3) in Feluy, Belgium.
A graduate of the University of Ghent, Belgium, as a Chemical Engineer, she joined the company in 1980, where she took several operational roles in the Total Refinery in Antwerp.
MSc, MBA, Isabelle Cardinael
Board Director - Investment Manager KBC Securities
Isabelle Cardinael obtained a Master in Applied Economics at KU Leuven and an MBA at KU Leuven and the University of California, Irvine.
Isabelle began her career within the KBC Group as correspondent banker for Latin America. Afterwards she transferred to KBC Real Estate, where she took care of funding for large scale real estate projects and took part in joint ventures with real estate developers.
Since 2013 Isabelle manages a portfolio of social impact investment funds in which KBC Bank participates, for example university funds and micro-financing funds. She represents KBC Bank in the board of these funds. University funds are investment funds in which the university and the financial partners join forces to invest in spin-off companies.
Isabelle is a membre of the Board of Directors of the Gemma Frisius Fund (university fund in collaboration with KU Leuven), Qbic Fund (university fund in collaboration with UGent, VUB and UAntwerpen), Baekeland Fund II (UGent), Bi³ Fund (VUB), Vives I (university fund in collaboration with UCL) and of several spin-off companies resulting from these funds. She is also counsillor and member of the investment committee of multiple micro-financing funds. She was recently appointed as member of the Investment committee of KBC Start it Fund, a KBC investment vehicle for start-up companies.
Ir. Luc Varigas
Luc Varigas graduated as a chemist and engineer from Chimie Paris Tech and he also holds the diploma of the French business school ESSEC- Grande Ecole.
He started his career in audit and consulting with several years at Arthur Andersen, then joined the pharma division of the Hoechst group which became Aventis and later merged into Sanofi, where he held various management positions with increasing responsibility, including board member assignments, in an International context. He joined in 2005 the specialty chemical group LANXESS in Switzerland as global CFO for one of the rubber business units. Since begin 2010 he has been managing director of LANXESS nv in Belgium, a company with two world scale production sites both located in the Antwerp chemical cluster and employing about 900 people.
Besides his professional responsibilities, he is also supporting early stage start-ups active in the field of chemistry through the private vehicle Altarence NV, which he founded with a partner.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Raf Dewil
Board Director - Professor KUL
Raf Dewil holds a MSc in Chemical Engineering (Burgerlijk Scheikundig Ingenieur) from KU Leuven (2003) and obtained his PhD in Bioscience Engineering at the University of Antwerp in 2006. Currently, he is a Professor with the Chemical Engineering Department of KU Leuven, where he heads the Laboratory for Process and Environmental Technology. Within the same department, he chairs the Sustainable Chemical Process Technology Cluster.
His main research domains include the application of advanced (physico)chemical techniques for the treatment of organic side- and waste streams and the chemical conversion of biomass and organic wastes.
He has (co-)authored over 65 publications in peer-reviewed international journals (over 2000 citations, h-index 20) and made about 80 presentations at international conferences.
He is Editor-in-Chief with the Journal of Environmental Management and a member of the editorial board of various international journals, including Renewable Energy. He was in the scientific committee of various renowned conferences, such as World Renewable Energy Conference (London, 2014), Environmental Applications of Advanced Oxidation Processes (Athens, 2015), European Conference on Sludge Management (Léon, 2013)). He is a board member of the Industrial Research Fund of KU Leuven and a member of the Chemical Engineering and Materials Science committee of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).
